Experiences of our trainees

We are happy to share our course participants’ experiences with the Del Ferro method. They each once made the choice to live a complaint-free life.

You do top-level sports together with Del Ferro

Just before my rowing competition, I went to Del Ferro. I had to row 7.5 km and control my breathing at the same time. I managed to do that perfectly.

I was considerably more relaxed during the race and also managed to stay well ahead of a rowing teammate who is 10 years younger than me. I now find it easier to cycle up the bridge too. And even the stairs are a piece of cake. Nice bonus, right?

Johan Cruyff ✝

Johan Cruyff, born April 25 , 1947 in Amsterdam, was a legendary Dutch soccer player and coach. He is considered one of the best soccer players of all time and won the Ballon d'Or three times. Cruijff played a crucial role in the success of Ajax and FC Barcelona, both as a player and coach, and introduced the "total soccer" philosophy. He died on March 24 , 2016, but his influence on soccer continues to be felt worldwide.

In the mid-1980s, I joined Ajax as technical director. This position was new in the world of soccer. I was put in charge of a very good, young, promising generation of soccer players. This was a completely new challenge for me. The experience and knowledge I had gained in my active career I could now be able to use them to be successful as a technical director as well.

By working with good trainers and also having my own opinion on training methods as a soccer player, I could now pass it on to this new generation of soccer players. A group with players like Marco van Basten, John van ‘t Schip, Sonny Silooy, Rob Witschge, Dennis Bergkamp, Aron Winter. I also chose Ronald Spelbos, Arnold Mühren and Jan Wouters.

Using people with experience, and an opinion, that can complement your own , I have always liked. It provides the right balance. I kept telling the players that everything was a learning process for them, learn from the successes and the mistakes by analyzing them. In the field I had experienced players and in my coaching staff I chose practitioners like Tonnie Bruins Slot.

So I was looking for the right balance with these practitioners, but I also wanted the young players to learn through other means.
Tension and lack of concentration are fatal to good results. Tension can paralyze a person, so that your legs no longer do what you want, and concentration is needed to stay sharp. During this time, I asked Len Del Ferro for help.

Del Ferro had already made a name for himself as a singer, vocal pedagogue, breathing specialist and stutter therapist. His method was based on concentration on the diaphragm muscle combined with a breathing technique he called flank breathing. That Del Ferro’ s help played an important part in winning the the European Cup for Cup Winners in 1987 is beyond doubt for me. His method took away tensions and gradually the concentration on the field got better and better.

Concentration and removing tension were also the focal points in the stutter therapy developed by Len Del Ferro. Len told me a lot about his method and always drew a parallel; his students were doing top sport with his stutter therapy!

I thought about that and came to the same conclusion on many levels. Many things that a top soccer player, or an athlete in general, has to take into account also apply to a course participant at Del Ferro. I also notice this these days in my talks and lectures for the Johan Cruyff Foundation. Del Ferro said that by concentrating, his students gained mastery over their diaphragm and therefore did not stutter and also, physically and mentally, took away tension.
There are also parallels in other areas; just think about discipline or sacrifice. Top athletes adhere to diets and disciplined lifestyles. But where an athlete gets rest, a student who wants to solve stuttering must apply the Del Ferro method all day long when speaking. This demands an iron discipline and lifestyle aimed at getting rid of stuttering.

And then of course THE parallel; having a goal!!! An athlete wants European or World or Olympic gold. For someone who stutters, the complete resolution of stuttering is the gold medal.

The parallels with top sports are there in many areas. A great thing is that with the Johan Cruyff Foundation , I also see a lot of what Len Del Ferro, and now Ingrid Del Ferro, his daughter, and her collaborators are doing; Providing assistance to people to develop physically and spiritually.

The course of action of Len and now Ingrid Del Ferro has greatly helped me and many people I have worked with.

With speaking, I have never had any problems in my life. The Del Ferro Institute has been successfully continued by Ingrid Del Ferro. Follow the guidelines of the Del Ferro method and get your gold medal so that speaking is no longer a problem for you either.

The Del Ferro breathing technique helps to relaxe when hitting the ball

Michiel Schapers

Michiel Schapers, born October 11, 1959 in Rotterdam, is a former Dutch tennis player. He reached his highest singles ranking in 25th place in February 1988. Schapers represented the Netherlands at the 1988 Olympics and reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 1988. After his active career, he became a coach and trainer, including of the Dutch Davis Cup team.

The news that Ingrid Del Ferro, director of the Del Ferro Institute, will once again work together with the KNLTB is , in my opinion a good message for the top youth in the Netherlands and their coaches. Functional breathing while playing tennis is not easy and is often underestimated.

This is because proper breathing technique prevents premature fatigue and it promotes relaxation while hitting the ball. In the first period that Ingrid introduced youth tennis players and coaches to functional breathing, the results were extremely positive. Players such as Robin Haase and Igor Sijsling were able to benefit from it at the time.

I therefore highly recommend the training sessions of Ingrid Del Ferro to anyone who wants to know more about proper breathing technique while playing tennis.

My best speech ever thanks to the Del Ferro method

Bibian Mentel ✝ • 2017

Bibian Mentel was a Dutch Paralympic snowboarder and three-time gold medalist. Despite her many battles with cancer, she continued to pursue her sport with unmatched resilience and perseverance. Bibian's determination and accomplishments made her an icon in the world of sports.

Through my osteopath, I was referred to Del Ferro to deepen my breathing, because I was breathing rather shallowly and in this way this way I could use my lungs even more optimally. Considering the fact that I am a professional athlete and have had 5 operations on my lungs so I was very curious and recognized that I could definitely benefit from this.

Ingrid’s 4 lessons were first of all very instructive and fun, but I could already see the benefits after the first lesson. More air and above all much more peace in my breathing and my whole body.

The lessons after that were mainly focused on making the technique my own, because I noticed that at first it was not yet automatic and so I had to pay very conscious attention to my breathing. Finally, the last lesson we also focused on applying this technique in my lectures that I give regularly.

My husband has heard my lecture many times and he always advised me to speak more quietly, take my time and take a break now and then, but I never really knew how. Last week, he heard me speak again for the first time and thought it was my best lecture ever…. This because, for the first time, I dared to insert ‘pauses’ to give the listener time to reflect on what they had just heard, which made the story come in even more.

Of course, as an athlete, I know that my breathing is important, but that this course has brought me so much, both athletically and in terms of my readings, I didn ‘ t expect!

I am less agitated and less insecure with the Del Ferro method

Tom • 2019

After the breath training, I am less agitated and less insecure. It gives me a lot of guidance before and after tense moments. The nice thing is that those become less exciting because now I know what to do.

Yesterday I played a professional golf tournament for the first time after 2.5 years. I played 18 holes, done the breathing exercise between each stroke, and before each stroke I didn ‘t step to the ball before having done a few good diaphragmatic breaths. Fine result achieved: 12th out of 70. And only prospects for improvement.

Symptoms diminish from the first session

Every time a great experience for our students. You never get used to it. Do you also want to live complaint free?
